Two World Champions to Compete for ASP Women's World Tour Wildcard

DEE WHY, Sydney, Australia (Tuesday 13th April, 2010): AUSTRALIA’s two world junior surfing champions will be pitted against each other in the upcoming Oakley Trials when they compete for the wildcard into the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic on Sydney's Northern Beaches on April 21st.

ASP World Junior Champion Laura Enever (Narrabeen, AUS) and ISA World Junior Champion Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, AUS) will feature in the class field of eight surfers contesting for the lone wildcard into the richest ASP Women’s World Tour event.

Explosive natural footer Enever has narrowly missed out on the coveted Oakley wildcard and is hoping 2010 is the year she gets to compete in her first ever ASP World Tour event.

“It would be so cool to win on home turf in front of my family and friends this year,” said Enever.

“I have just missed out on winning the Oakley wildcard before which has been frustrating,” she added.

Eighteen year-old Enever has learnt not to underestimate Wright who won the wildcards into the two opening world tour events in Australia this year.

“Watching Tyler surf and compete pushes me a lot.She is surfing really good and really smart, so once again she will dangerous and tough to beat,” said Enever.

Wright has impressed all over the past two months with three time world champion Stephanie Gilmore (Aus) even admitting to nerves when competing against the 16 year-old prodigy. Despite all the accolades the amicable teenager is aware of how dangerous Enever will also be at Dee Why.

“Laura's at the top of the world junior tour and surfing really well. She is the ASP World Junior Champion, so she will be tough to beat,” said Wright.

“It'll take my best performance to win,” added Wright.

At just 14 years of age Wright made history as the youngest-ever surfer to win an ASP World Tour event, which she did in 2008 as the Oakley Wildcard at the Sydney ASP Women's World Tour event.

“That win was the most amazing feeling I've experienced in surfing. I'd love to achieve that again, but just competing is a thrill,” added Wright.

The class field also features Felicity Palmateer (W.A.), Paige Haggerston (NSW), rising American star Sage Erickson, U/16’s Australian champion Ellie Jean Coffey (NSW), Jess Van der Meer (NSW) and runner-up U/18 Australian champion Nikki Van Dijk (VIC).

The Oakley Trials will be staged on Wednesday April 21 at Dee Why on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

The Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic has a waiting period from April 21 to 26 and only requires two days in which to be finalised.
